TARIKH AKHIR PENGECUALIAN JUALAN KERETA KEKAL 30 JUN 2022

Jualan dijangka pulih bulan Februari selepas aktiviti pengeluaran dimulakan

Isu bekalan komponen menjejaskan pengeluaran semua model

14,187 UNITS SOLD IN NOVEMBER RAISED YTD SALES TO 100,566 UNITS

- Proton Saga reclaims national best-seller crown with 5,666 units

Subang Jaya, 02 December 2021 - National car maker PROTON has broken through the 100,000 sales barrier for a third year in succession. Overall sales of 14,187 units (domestic + export) in November have pushed its year-to-date (YTD) number to 100,566 units, raising expectations the company will be able to end the year with positive sales growth.

Looking at the month of November, sales improved by 6.2% over October marking the third consecutive month of growth. Compared to November 2020 sales have increased by 24.3%, which is also reflected in the growth of YTD sales by 4.3%. Domestic market share for the month is estimated to stand at 24.5% while YTD market share has grown by 1.9% and currently sits at 22.8%.

Proton Saga reclaims best-seller crown as Proton X50 deliveries cross 4,000 units

November was an active month for the Malaysian automotive industry as new model launches and the news about the extension of tax-free incentive period brought a sense of excitement to car buyers. Component supply issues continue to be an area of concern for all manufacturers but overall, brands with sufficient units did well.

Proton was no exception. The evergreen Proton Saga, that combines performance with an attractive design and value, had its best sales month since December 2020 with 5,666 units were sold, allowing it to reclaim the bestselling model in Malaysia crown it last held in September this year. It also remains as the champion of the Asegment sedan class, a position the company is hopeful it will retain to the end of the year.

Not to be outdone, the Proton X50 had a record month with 4,010 units delivered. That is significantly better than its previous high of 3,839 units set in October, making the B-segment intelligent SUV the best-seller not just for its class but for the SUV segment too. The Proton X70 also continued its run of success with 1,901 units delivered this month, keeping it far ahead in the C-segment SUV class.

The rest of Proton’s model range performed according to expectations. The Proton Exora enjoyed a fourth consecutive month of growth and continued to dominate the C-segment MPV market with 434 units sold. Component supply issues continue to plague the 2022 Proton Iriz and Persona limiting their production volumes, but both achieved 642 and 1,534 units respectively.

“November was a good sales month for Proton though overall industry numbers continue to be limited by supply and not demand. Crossing over the 100,000-unit threshold with a month to go is a highpoint for us after another year disrupted by Covid-19. We are humbled by the achievement and are now confident of ending the year with an increase in total sales. This will make Proton the sole national brand to grow sales and market share this year and give us a strong base heading into 2022 as we look to consolidate and improve our ranking both domestically and overseas,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.

PROTON LAUNCHES SPECIAL EDITION MODELS

- Persona, Exora, Iriz and Saga Special Edition models introduced simultaneously

- Unique features paired with limited production numbers

Subang Jaya, 18 February 2021 - – PROTON launched four Special Edition models which it unveiled simultaneously during the company’s third virtual launch. The limited production models have been given the moniker Black Edition (Persona and Exora) and R3 Limited Edition (Iriz and Saga); and were designed to broaden the appeal of each model while offering more choice to customers.

Limited in numbers but not in showroom appeal

Following the successful launch of the Saga Anniversary Edition, which sold out its allocation of 1,100 units in just five days, the Special Edition models are designed to satisfy customer demand for unique Proton models.

The Persona and Exora Black Edition add style and luxury to vehicles that are usually sold on their practicality and comfort. As the name suggests, they are presented in black with gold accents subtly accentuating the bumpers and alloy wheels. Inside, both come with black leatherette seats, door trims and floor console with the Persona receiving the black treatment for the headlining, while the Exora is fitted with an overhead monitor.

While style and luxury are the main thrusts of the Black Edition models, the Proton Iriz and Saga R3 Limited Edition celebrate PROTON’s successful motorsports division. The R3 badge has always been reserved for the sportiest Proton models and both the Iriz and Saga are worthy recipients of this moniker.

Each car is painted black and adorned with the distinctive R3 livery used on PROTON’s race cars. The Iriz is equipped with 16-inch R3 alloy wheels while the Saga is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels with matte grey finish. The sporty R3 bodykit completes the outer changes while inside, a unique black-yellow interior, leatherette seats and R3 carpet mats create a distinctive ambiance with sporty appeal.

“By launching four Special Edition models today, PROTON is giving its customers more choices. These are products manufactured in Malaysia targeted to Malaysian car buyers and are reminders that PROTON is and always will be a ‘full-service’ car manufacturer with the ability to design, develop and build our own cars from a clean sheet of paper,” said En. Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, PROTON Edar.

NON-NATIONAL BRANDS NOW LEFT WITH 38% MARKET SHARE

National brands Perodua and Proton have seen their combined market share rise in the last few years, propped up by continued strong sales by market leader Perodua and the revival of Proton, which reached its nadir of 11% in 2018. Their combined 62.1% share of 2020’s total industry volume (TIV) is the highest since 2003.

With six out of every 10 cars sold last year being a Perodua or Proton, the slice of the pie for non-national marques is shrinking. From a high of 53% in 2014, where foreign brands overtook P1-P2 for the first time ever, the trend held firm till 2018 (51%). However, the rise of Proton in 2019-2020 ate into the non-national share, and 2020’s 38% is the lowest level for NNs since 2003 (34%).

We pointed out last week that this was not always the case. In fact, when we were covering the 2014 TIV, the breaking news back then was the non-national brands overtaking P1-P2 for the maiden time. Buoyed by an on-form Honda (2014 sales were up 50% year-on-year), foreign brands were looking up. P2 chiefs attributed the shift to market liberalisation and raised alarm back then.
